For thousands of high school basketball players, the dream of playing college basketball is alive and well. The grind is real! Early morning workouts, late-night practices and weekend tournaments. But for all the passion and work ethic, the path to a college roster spot is steeper than ever.

1. The Odds Are Against You But That’s Not the End of the Story
Let’s start with the hard numbers.
According to the NCAA and other governing bodies:
- There are over 500,000 high school boys’ basketball players in the U.S.
- Only about 18,000 go on to play college basketball at any level (NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and NJCAA combined).
- That’s roughly 3.5% of high school players who make it to college ball.
- For NCAA Division I specifically, the odds are even slimmer—less than 1%.
These aren’t scare tactics, they’re reality checks. For those of you who think you’re above the NAIA or NCAA Division III level, think again!
The takeaway? College basketball isn’t just for “good” players. It’s for players who stand out on and off the court. Being a high school standout isn’t enough anymore. The margins are razor thin.
2. The Competition Is Fierce and Global
Gone are the days when being the best player in your conference or even your state guaranteed college looks. Today’s college coaches are evaluating:
- Players nationwide.
- Top talent from overseas—Europe, Canada, Australia, and beyond.
- Transfers from other colleges (via the NCAA Transfer Portal which we will cover in a future blog).
- Postgrads from prep schools and academies.
- Junior College standouts looking to move on to the four-year level.
That means even if you’re one of the best in your area, you’re competing with hundreds sometimes thousands of others just as good (or better), who are older, stronger, and more experienced.
College coaches are looking for difference-makers. They are looking for athletes who not only have skill but also play with purpose, understand the game, and fit a specific team need. They’re not just watching your stats; they’re watching your attitude, your body language, your ability to adapt and lead.
3. Roster Spots Are Limited and Hard to Earn
Let’s break down the supply side.
Each year:
- A Division I men’s basketball team has 15 scholarship spots, and not all are open each year. Most programs on average only bring in 2 to 4 new players annually.
- Division II programs can offer up to 10 full scholarships, but most stretch them across their entire roster. Many coaches split scholarships to maximize talent. (Important Note: not all Division II programs are “fully funded” meaning not all programs have 10 full scholarships to offer).
- Division III schools don’t offer athletic scholarships at all, but the competition is still extremely high. Division III programs recruit just like scholarship level programs. They have specific positional needs, are only bringing in a limited number of players and are looking for the absolute best player they can land.
- NAIA programs can also offer athletic scholarships with a fully funded NAIA program offering 8 full ride scholarships. Like D2, many NAIA programs are not fully funded. I was a head coach at an NAIA school for six years and we operated with only 2 scholarships.
- Junior College schools offer legitimate options, but rosters fill up quickly, and those spots are earned, not handed out. Junior College coaches are looking for top tier talent just like the other levels.
Here’s the kicker: roster turnover is slower than you think. Players don’t leave every year. Add in transfers and redshirts, and it’s clear there simply aren’t enough seats at the table for every deserving high school player.
What Can You Do? Be Proactive, Be Realistic, and Be Strategic

- Start early. Waiting until senior year to get serious can be too late.
- Cast a wide net. Don’t focus only on D1. There are great opportunities at every level.
- Be honest about your current skillset, physical tools, and fit.
- Get visible. You need game film, highlights, and credible evaluations in front of the right coaches.
- Focus on development. It’s not just about exposure. It’s about being ready when the opportunity comes.
- Be proactive. If you sit around and wait for the phone to ring you could wait a long time. Gone are the days when college coaches need to chase prospects. With that said, it is very important that prospects reach out to college coaches, express interest and stay consistent. College Coaches want players who want to be at their school.
