College basketball coaches follow a systematic process when recruiting student-athletes for their program each year. Their goal is to ultimately find players who fit program needs, have high character, are talented enough to play at their level and are academically committed. Coaches will identify talent through a thorough evaluation process. Once identified as a prospective recruit, coaches will initiate contact with the prospect to start building a relationship to see if they are a good fit for their program. Communication between a coach and a prospect is all regulated by the NCAA. The NCAA dictates when and how contact can occur. College coaches will continue to evaluate prospects and build a relationship with them over the course of the recruitment process by attending games, regular contacts (phone, text, DM, video call) and campus or in-home visits. If a coach believes the prospect is a fit, a verbal offer would ensue and securing a commitment would then close the recruitment process.
