The college basketball recruitment process can be confusing. There is a lot of misinformation out there and as a result, players and families often make uninformed decisions which leads to disappointment and frustration. At Net Results we have taken on clients as early as their freshman year of high school and as late as Spring of their senior year. Our advice to families is that the earlier you start the better. There are a lot of things you can be doing early in your High School career to get a jump start on your recruitment process.

Learning about specific schools you might have an interest in and learning about the different levels of college basketball and what it takes to play at each level can help you gauge where you are at as a player and what you need to work on moving forward. Getting into the gym and working on your game and basketball IQ is crucial to your recruitment and the earlier you start the better. Additionally, getting off to a great start in the classroom can have a major impact on your college recruitment and the number of opportunities there could be for you at the college level.

7) How can my son or daughter earn a basketball scholarship to play in college?

Earning a college basketball scholarship is challenging. Roughly 3-4% of high school basketball players earn an opportunity to play at the college level and less than 1% go on to play at the NCAA Division 1 level. Even though the odds are stacked against you, there is still a chance. It is important to be open to all levels of college basketball. The NCAA D2, NAIA and Junior College levels all can offer athletic scholarship dollars. NCAA Division 3 programs cannot offer athletic scholarships, but many can put together very competitive financial aid packages for student-athletes, sometimes even better than scholarship level schools.

If earning a basketball scholarship is your goal, there are things you must be doing to give yourself the best chance to achieve your goal. First, get a player evaluation from a knowledgeable coach that understands the different levels of college basketball and what it takes to play at each level. An evaluation will help you develop, improve and let you know where your game is at and if/where it translates to the college level. Second, you need to create a player profile that markets you effectively to college coaches and reach out to college coaches expressing your interest in their program. Finally, you need to perform! In the classroom and on the floor. Coaches want players who play hard, have a skill set that fits their style of play and system, that are good teammates and are coachable, that are committed academically, that are consistent in their play and who win.

College coaches are constantly evaluating players. They are evaluating prospects on a variety of different factors, and it goes well beyond how talented they are. Here are some key attributes college coaches are looking for in a potential recruit:

High Character

College coaches are looking for players who possess a relentless work ethic, high motor (they play really hard), coachable, good teammate, respectful of others, honest, reliable and possess strong leadership qualities.

Academically Committed

Coaches are not going to babysit you on or off the floor. College Coaches want players who are committed to the classroom and who value their academics. They need to know that you can handle the academic rigor at their school.

Talent

College coaches are looking for players that have the skill set, athleticism, basketball IQ, defensive IQ and toughness, versatility, and consistency to play in their program?

Fit their program

Not all college programs need all 5 positions in every recruiting class. College coaches are looking for players who fulfill a positional need, are compatible with their style of play and fit their team’s culture and standards.

Passion for the Game

College coaches want players who LOVE basketball not like basketball. There is a big difference. Coaches are looking for players with a strong passion for the game. That have a desire to develop, work hard and are relentless competitors.

9) How do I know if a college basketball coach is sincerely interested in me?

There are various levels of interest a college coach may show in a potential recruit. It starts with a college coach consistently contacting you via phone or text. Understand that college coaches maintain contact with several prospects so that does not mean an offer is inevitable. Warmer levels of interest is when a coach invites you to make a campus visit, they come to visit you at school or home or they attend several of your games. The ultimate form of sincere interest is when a coach extends an offer to join their program.

10) What should I include in an Introductory Email to College Coaches?

College Coaches get bombarded with emails from prospective recruits every day. It is important that when you send an Introductory Email to a College Coach that you follow some key guidelines:

• Keep it brief.
• Have a catchy subject line.
• Introduce yourself and express your interest in their program.
• Include your academic and athletic stats (attach your HS transcripts).
• Provide video for the coach to view and evaluate.
• Provide your contact information (and your coaches contact information).

11) What are common mistakes players make during the recruitment process?

Some of the common mistakes players make during the recruitment process are:

• Not following up with college coaches in a timely manner.
• Posting inappropriate content on their social media pages.
• Believing everything they read/see on social media.
• Starting the recruitment process too late.
• Leaning on the wrong people who do not have knowledge or insight on the college recruitment process.
• Overestimating their talent level and not considering the levels of college basketball where they can actually play.

12) Are all college basketball camp invites legitimate?

College basketball elite camps can be a valuable tool during the recruiting process. Camps provide an opportunity for players to gain exposure to college coaches, get on college campuses and sometimes… it can lead to an offer. Not all camps are equal. Elite camp invites are sent out to 100’s of prospects. Many college programs use their summer elite camps to create additional revenue for the staff or program. It is very important before committing to a camp that you do your homework. Make sure that the school that has invited you has seen you play and has sincere interest in you as a potential recruit to their program.

13) Do I need a certain GPA or test score to be able to play college basketball?

The NCAA requires a minimum core GPA to qualify to play college athletics. The GPA is based on the student-athlete’s16 NCAA approved courses. The minimum core GPA requirement for the NCAA Division 1 level is a 2.3 GPA. At the Division II level the minimum core GPA requirement is a 2.2 GPA. The NCAA Division III level has no minimum GPA requirement for incoming freshman although you must meet the minimum admissions requirements of the college you are attending to be eligible to play. The NAIA minimum GPA requirement to be eligible to play for incoming freshman is a 2.3 GPA. There is no GPA requirement at the Junior College level.

14) As a High School basketball prospect will the Transfer Portal affect my recruitment?

The transfer portal has limited the number of roster spots available at the college level for high school prospects. Many college coaches and programs are prioritizing the transfer portal over high school recruits to fill gaps on their rosters. With an overflow of players in the transfer portal, college coaches now have the ability to take a more experienced player rather than an unproven high school prospect.

The first thing to understand about college basketball is that all levels are elite. There are great players and coaches at every level. There are “pros” at every level of college basketball. I played and coached in arguably one of the best NCAA Division III leagues in the country and many of the best players in the league had opportunities to play beyond college as a professional player overseas and many did. The biggest difference between each level of college basketball is size, speed and athleticism. The higher the level generally the bigger, faster and more athletic the player. From a skill standpoint, there are extremely talented players at all levels.
